On Monday, January 22, 2024, Our Choice Coalition honored Dr. Caitlin Bernard for her courageous advocacy, ensuring the right for her patients to receive health care despite unrelenting harassment and unwanted attention. The video above premiered at our event and shows the impact of Indiana’s total abortion ban on Dr. Bernard and other healthcare providers in Indiana.

Who is Dr. Caitlin Bernard?

Dr. Caitlin Bernard is an Indiana-licensed OBGYN physician and abortion provider who became a target of politicians denying the negative effects of abortion bans in the aftermath of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. The story of a ten-year-old rape victim who had to cross state lines to seek health care made top national headlines because it showed the tragic, real-life impact of the falling of Roe. Indiana’s Attorney General, Todd Rokita, reacted by going on Fox News and accusing Dr. Bernard of being “an abortion activist acting as a doctor.” Indiana was the first state in the country to actively ban abortion after the fall of Roe.
In the summer of 2023, the Indiana Commission on Women unanimously selected Dr. Caitlin Bernard to receive the State of Indiana’s prestigious Torchbearer Award, but she was removed from the honoree list by Gov. Eric Holcomb’s administration. The Indiana Commission on Women gives this award annually to women who “have become true beacons of light…[whose] stories of courage, perseverance, and compassion create a legacy and inspiration for all.”
